Cresta Viento Alpacas

Linley Yeoman is an alpaca breeder with a passion for breeding quality Huacaya alpacas. Cresta Viento Alpacas is a relatively new stud that is making gains on the more established alpaca breeders with attention to breeding predominantly white alpacas with quality, luxurious fibre.

Linley began the stud in late 2004 with 5 breeding females purchased from some of New Zealand’s top alpaca studs. Focusing on breeding for SRS® Cresta Viento Alpacas has continued to improve fibre quality and animal conformation every year. Show results are a testament to the success of the programme with wins in both fibre classes and conformation composite classes in the first 2 years of showing.

The stud is situated on the rolling foothills of the Kaimai range, just south of Katikati in the Bay of Plenty. The picturesque setting suits the alpaca, which prefers the fibrous diet and the free-draining soil on the property. It also lends itself to the stud name, which is Spanish for “Wind Ridge” (literally "crest of the wind") – a nod to the dramatic wind clouds that roll off the Kaimai range.

Alpaca management

Day to day management of Cresta Viento Alpacas rests with Linley, which means she has to ensure her animals are well trained for ease of handling. She does everything from toenail clipping to vaccinations, breeding to haltering and has become adept at finding ways to manage alpacas on her own.

Shearing is the only task where she requires assistance and this is done by a trained contractor.

Cresta Viento Alpacas also feature a small line of coloured alpaca, bred for their varied coloured fleeces. These are used by Linley in the production of her range of hand-made, unique alpaca fibre products.

Linley is pleased to be able to offer a range of alpacas for sale including a number of wethers for pets and companion animals and quality breeding female alpacas in a variety of “Alpaca Pac’s”.
