Facial Eczema is a serious condition that can have devastating effects for alpacas. Prevention is the best management tool for FE as treatment does not repair the damage done to the liver.
FE is caused by spores containing the sporidesmin toxin - they affect the liver, and can result in liver damage.
- WHEN: Generally from late December until mid May
- WHERE: Areas prone to high humidity; dry period followed by rain, heavy dew during the warm/hot period
Although the conditions that cause FE are mainly found in the North Island climatic changes mean it can be a danger throughout New Zealand - even in areas not usually affected by it. Continuous exposure to low spore levels during the year is equally dangerous.
Prevention involves pasture management, spraying with a fungicide and feeding alpacas zinc nuts or drenching with zinc oxide. Testing for facial eczema is done by taking grass samples and using a microscope to count the number of spores.
Cresta Viento Alpacas does experience high facial eczema spore counts and Linley has developed a management system to ensure her alpacas remain free from liver damage. Her training as a scientist allows her to effectively test for and manage pasture and animal treatments.
Linley offers a unique FE spore count service and advice on managing the FE risk for your alpacas. Contact Linley for more information about FE.
The AANZ also provides paddock cards with FE facts and advice on management.
