SRS
SRSŪ
is a breeding system originally created for the merino wool industry
over the past 20 years. It is now being used to increase fleece
weights, and fibre fineness and length in the alpaca industry.
“Soft
rolling skin” is a visible trait in skin biology. The skin is thinner
and more mobile than in many other animals and the biological changes
in the skin can be verified using skin biopsies. SRSŪ alpacas show
increased density of fibre follicles, increased rates of fleece growth
(increased length) and increased fineness of both secondary (fleece)
and primary (hair) fibres until they become almost indistinguishable.
Cresta
Viento Alpacas uses SRSŪ as a breeding tool to tap the genetic
potential of alpacas by increasing the fineness and weights of the
fleece and decreasing the number and micron of hairs within the fleece.

SRSŪ Alpaca breeding
At
Cresta Viento Alpacas Linley is increasingly using stud males to breed
for the traits exhibited by “soft rolling skin.” Linley uses her
knowledge as a scientist when it comes to selecting stud males for
improved genetics in her alpaca breeding programme.
Alpaca stud male Cresta Viento Celwyn, recently classed as a wool sire by Jim Watts of SRS®, is a welcome addition to the SRS® breeding programme, joining Waiheke Conquistadore ET in stud services.
